Greendoc likely has more experience with centipede, so may be able to offer additional advice. Last edited by Spammage on Sat Mar 31, pm, edited 1 time in total. When it is mixed with Centpede, the Zoysia looks like a fast growing weed with darker green leaves. You will also despise mowing it. It will look shredded and full of thatch unless mowed with a greensmower or else a front throw reel mower. Big companies are notorious for killing Centipede.
For one thing, the grass is sensitive to overdosage with broadleaf weed killer. A common application of lawn companies is to apply broadleaf weed killer with MSM. Unless that is done through a boom or pressure regulated wand applying a set quantity of product per acre, it will probably kill the Centipede in spots and patches. What I would do in your case is to get a soil test done. Correct the soil so that it is according to these reequirements.
Low Phosphorus and a pH under 6. You may need to apply Sulfur to lower pH. That is normally a good practice for Centipede lawns unless they are growing on already ideal soil. Then you seed with Centipede grass. I personally love dealing with Centipede. Would rather have it over Zoysia any day. It does not grow like mad as Zoysia does.
It does not need a lot of fertilizer. It is also rather easy to mow compared to Zoysia. I have dealt with a lawn that had mixed Centipede and Zoysia. Is that correct? I have all sand and silt base with sod laid on top. Almost no actual dirt. Zoysia is like a black vehicle. I have it in my yard and it can't stand high traffic areas.
It's completely died around my kids swing set and where we walk to turn on sprinklers. I also had a really bad problem w it "haying up" when cutting last summer, no matter how high I set my mower. But it's looking good so far this year It does run, just slowly and will take over. It's a good grass, just be prepared to work w it. No kids, one dog stays in backyard with centipede , and three days off a week. Bring it on. Other than a spring weed and feed, 1 or 2 summer feedings, a winterizer, aeration, and dethatching, what are we looking at?
That should do it. I hit it w weed and feed in spring and trip 13 early summer. Love that zoysia is last to turn brown in winter and first to green back up in spring. I do find that my dogs bionic piss destroys the grass faster w the zoysia than st aug. Bag the trimmings when you cut it.
I had zoysia in a yard for several years. It looks and feels like carpet. It is a lot of work had to cut it at least twice a week in the summer and always bag the clippings or the thatch will get too thick.
But man it is a great looking lawn. Good luck with the seed, I'd like to know how that works out. I usually bag mow every other time. I'm feeling less and less confident about the seed now.
I'm thinking extra plugs is the key. I sodded 28 pallets of emerald zoysia can't get from seed from Foley, AL, and planted another 10K sqft area with zenith seed side yard opposite of driveway about 8 years ago. The seed came up and established very well and is still doing well today.
But I started with fresh fill topsoil, and I have a sprinkler system and I seeded a little heavier than the stated rate. If I recall correctly, it's fairly critical to keep the seeds from drying in order for them to take.
Also, if you cut the grass lower the zoysia should take over faster. No guarantees but that is the approach I would take laugh…because I am using something similiar to that for my St Augustine grass.
But, reading your post, you may not be happy with zoysia after you get it. I am sorry, but there is virtually nothing less expensive and less labor-intensive in the south than centipede. Should I aerate my Zoysia lawn?
It is recommended that the lawn be core aerated once a year, Zoysia can be aerated anytime during the growing season but it is recommended that it be done during early summer when growth is at it's peak. Following aeration with fertilization and Lime for Optimal results. Will centipede grass choke out Bermuda grass?
Bermuda and Centipede are two popular warm-weather grasses that are commonly used in lawns. If allowed to grow unchecked, Bermuda grass will overtake or choke off Centipede grass. Unless it is completely removed, which is difficult, Bermuda grass will keep coming back.
Can I mix Bermuda and centipede grass? Both Bermuda grass and centipedegrass are warm-season grasses and will turn brown in winter when temperatures become sufficiently cool. So, if you are overseeding the centipedegrass because you want to ensure that your lawn remains green year-round, choose a cool-season grass to overseed the centipedegrass. Will Zoysia choke out Bermuda? Chokes Out Weeds Once established, the dense turf created by zoysia significantly reduces summer weeds.
Amazoy will choke out all existing cultivated and wild grasses, including Bermuda often called wire grass and St. For best results keep these grasses away from newly planted zoysia plugs. How long does it take Zoysia grass seed to grow? Can you mix Bermuda and Zoysia grass? If you have some areas with 5 hours or more of full sun, zoysia sod should do well.
